Anthony Martial’s stunning solo goal on his debut against Liverpool has been named Manchester United’s Goal of the Month for September.
After coming off the bench midway through the second half at Old Trafford, the French forward took precisely 20 minutes to add his own chapter to the fixture’s storied history.
With United leading 2-1 and facing a nervy final five minutes after Christian Benteke’s spectacular overhead kick for the visitors, Martial took centre stage in front of the Stretford End to seal the points for his side.
Picking up the ball on the left, the 19-year-old glided past three defenders before opening up his body and placing the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet into the far corner, to spark thunderous jubilation inside the Theatre of Dreams.
The strike emerged a clear winner from our eight-strong, high-calibre shortlist this month, garnering 65 per cent of votes from ManUtd.com users. Daley Blind’s earlier opener against the Merseysiders came second in the poll with 11 per cent and Chris Smalling’s winner against Wolfsburg was third with 10 per cent.
Van Gaal told MUTV after the match: “Anthony scored a marvellous goal. I have seen also that, physically, he can play in the Premier League. And he can dribble.”
Blind added: “He’s a big talent and we all need to be happy that he’s in our team and that he created a goal like this.” United’s other scorer against Liverpool, Ander Herrera, commented: “Anthony is very quick, he’s very mobile and you saw how he kicked the ball in front of the keeper – unbelievable.”
