Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney have all been nominated for Manchester United’s Player of the Month award for March.

After a month in which the Reds won all three Barclays Premier League games, there was stiff competition for a place on the three-man shortlist. Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick were among those who were perhaps unlucky to miss out.

Marouane Fellaini | 4 appearances (all starts), 1 goal
Fellaini scored the opener against Spurs while bringing strength, aggression and guile in an advanced role. The Belgian was also outstanding at Liverpool and has become a key part of Louis van Gaal’s attacking strategy, earning the manager’s trust.

Juan Mata | 3 appearances (2 starts, 1 sub), 2 goals, 1 Man of the Match
Mata didn’t play in United’s only March defeat – the FA Cup exit to Arsenal – but he came on at Newcastle in time for Young’s late winner and he was afforded a standing ovation when he was substituted against Tottenham. Of course, no fan needs to be reminded here of his¬†Anfield heroics as his brilliant brace earned the sweetest of successes.

Wayne Rooney | 4 appearances (all starts), 2 goals, 1 Man of the Match
After his tireless harrying of the Newcastle defence reaped dividends in the dying seconds, the captain headed home in the loss to Arsenal and was Man of the Match against Spurs, again finding the net with a solo strike. Despite having his injury-time penalty at Anfield saved by Simon Mignolet, his form as a central striker certainly merits his inclusion.
