Ashley Young has been voted Manchester United Player of the Month for May by the fans, beating fellow nominees Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling.

The trio were also shortlisted for April’s award, when Herrera received the accolade, but the Spaniard had to settle for the runner-up spot in our final monthly poll of the season with 34 per cent of the vote, while defender Smalling picked up 9 per cent.

Young, however, earned 57 per cent of votes from fans on after four appearances in May and three assists, including two during the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. And he tweeted his appreciation, saying: “Thanks to all the fans who voted, nice way to finish my season.”

The award caps an impressive year for the 29-year-old, who played 29 times for United in 2014/15 and scored two goals. Ash told us recently: “I’ve really enjoyed playing football again. I’ve kicked on and enjoyed every minute of this season.”
